Best Buy Return Policy

Best Buy’s return policy states that most products can be returned within 15 days of purchase for a refund or exchange. However, some products have different return periods, such as cell phones and devices with a carrier contract, which have a 14-day return period, and major appliances, which have a 15 or 30-day return period depending on the product.

To be eligible for a return, the product must be in its original packaging, with all accessories and components included, and in new or like-new condition. Best Buy reserves the right to refuse returns or charge a restocking fee if the product is not in its original condition or has been used, damaged, or missing parts.

Best Buy also offers free returns by mail or in-store for online purchases. However, some products, such as those marked as non-returnable or final sale, may be excluded from this policy.

What is Best Buy's In-Store Return Policy

Best Buy’s return policy allows you 15 days to return most items and 14 days for devices that need activation (such as cell phones and smartwatches). If you are a member of their Totaltech program ($199.99/year), you get 60 days to return most items. There may be a 15% restocking fee for certain open-box items or a $45 return fee for devices that need activation. No restocking fees apply for unopened items, Best Buy Totaltech members, or residents of certain states. Best Buy accepts open-box returns as long as the item is in like-new condition and has all accessories and original packaging. Returns without a receipt require ID and may result in store credit or an exchange, but Best Buy tracks all returns. Refunds are issued in the same payment method, with a store credit for gifts. Best Buy’s electronics return policy doesn’t vary much and has few exceptions. To return a laptop, it must be returned within 15 days, and for other electronics, it follows Best Buy’s standard return policy.

Final sale and nonreturnable items 

All final sale merchandise cannot be returned. Other nonreturnable purchases include custom orders, personalized orders, non-subscription digital content (including digital gaming but excluding Microsoft Office), prepaid cards (including third-party gift cards and prepaid phone cards), vehicle replacement key fobs, memberships, completed services, plumbing items including bidets, sexual wellness products, trading cards (including Pokémon cards), home standby generators, opened products that interact with bodily fluids, opened SIM kits, opened consumable items including batteries, cleaning agents, oils, fuel, filters, cleaners, health supplements, health test kits, ink and 3D printer filament.

Like-new condition 

Items need to be returned in a like-new condition. Items that are damaged, unsanitary, dented, scratched or missing major contents may be denied a return. Apparel must not be worn or laundered, and its original tags must be attached for us to accept a return.  

How to return a major appliance

We want you to be satisfied with your purchase from us. Before you accept delivery of your major appliance, please inspect it. If any issue exists, you may refuse delivery. Once you have accepted delivery (or if you brought the major appliance home yourself), you have 15 days to contact us regarding defects, damage, or other issues. Please do not contact the store. Extended Holiday For Best Buy Return Policy

Customers can shop with peace of mind with easy returns. And this year, the extended Holiday Returns Policy starts early. Purchases made Oct. 23, 2023, through Dec. 31, 2023, have an extended return period through Jan. 13, 2024, excluding items purchased with a third-party contract (e.g., activatable devices [cell phones, cellular tablets, mobile hotspots, cellular wearables] and AppleCare+ plans, etc.), major appliances and holiday products (e.g., artificial trees, lights, decorations, etc.). Other exclusions, including restocking fees, non-returnable products, and all other terms and conditions of the Best Buy Return & Exchange Promise apply.

Holiday Return And Exchange Periods

Almost every purchase made throughout November and December can be returned through January 14, 2024. Purchases made between November 1 and December 31, 2023, have an extended return period through January 13, 2024, excluding cell phones, cellular tablets, cellular wearables, AppleCare monthly plans, and major appliances. All other terms and conditions of our Return & Exchange Promise apply.

My Best Buy® Elite and Elite Plus members have an extended holiday return/exchange window for products purchased between November 1 and December 31, 2023. My Best Buy Elite members have the greater of January 13, 2023, or 30 days from the date the purchaser received the product, to return or exchange the product.

My Best Buy Elite Plus members have the greater of January 13, 2023, or 45 days from the date the purchaser received the product, to return or exchange the product. Previously mentioned exclusions apply. 3

What about Best Buy Holiday products?

Artificial trees, wreaths and garlands along with holiday lights, decorations and inflatables can be returned within 15 days for all customers, including My Best Buy® Elite and My Best Buy® Elite Plus customers, for a full refund.

Best Buy Returns With No Receipt

The return policy of Best Buy is stringent when it comes to returns without a receipt, as it requires ID. However, if you are a member of the My Best Buy rewards program, you can avoid the need to present a receipt by providing your phone number, which the store can use to look up your order. Additionally, if you visit the Customer Service desk, Best Buy can find your purchase using your credit card.

In the event that you are unable to provide proof of purchase, you may still be eligible for store credit (minus state sales tax) or an exchange, provided that the item is unused and unopened. You must present identification and provide your email address, and all returns will be monitored. Keep in mind that Best Buy may reject your return if you cannot provide proof of purchase.

How to return an item

Gather the purchases you want to return, along with the original contents and packaging.

Return at a store

You may return any item purchased on at any BestBuy store. For faster return processing, please bring your packing slip (if you received one), or your receipt, the credit card used to make your purchase, and a valid photo ID.

Return by mail via the carrier of your choice

If you received a packing slip, place the return form portion of it in the box with your return. If you did not receive a packing slip, you may get a pre-populated return form by looking up your order. If you can’t locate your order, print a blank return form and fill it out. Then, place the completed form in the box with your return. Put the return label on the package, add postage and mail it via the carrier of your choice. 

Use our prepaid return label

You will get free shipping on your return by using our pre-paid label. Log in to your Best Buy account to locate your order. Print a prepaid shipping label. Put the return label on the package and take it to an authorized UPS drop off location and ship it to us during your return period.

Best Buy Refund method and timing:

With a few exceptions, we will reimburse you for returned items in the same way you paid for them. If you prefer, you can make an exchange for the same item.

For returns by mail, once we receive your return, we will process it within 3–5 business days. Depending on your bank’s processing time, it may take up to 7 days after we process the return to reflect on your account.

If you paid more than $800 in cash or more than $250 by check or by a debit card without a major credit card logo, we will refund you by check within 10 business days. Any amounts deducted from a gift card will be credited to the gift card. If you no longer have the gift card used for an order, please call us at 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289) with your order number handy, and we’ll be happy to send you a replacement.

Special considerations:

Return shipping fees

If you return an item using a prepaid method from our Online Returns Center, and the reason for return is not a result of a Best Buy error, the cost of return shipping will be deducted from your refund. Estimated return shipping fees will be displayed within the Online Returns Center when you are choosing the prepaid return label method for your return. If the return is the result of a Best Buy error, we’ll refund return shipping costs as well.

Damaged, defective or incorrect items

If you receive a product that is damaged in shipping, defective or that is not the product you ordered, please return it during your return and exchange time period to a Best Buy store and we’ll arrange for a replacement.

Returns lacking proof of purchase:

Reimbursements on returns lacking proof of purchase may be denied or limited, and state sales tax and fees will not be reimbursed.

Connected and Wi-Fi devices

Please make sure that all data has been removed and the device is no longer linked to any cloud account or to any other device so that we may accept the return of this product. If you decide to return a phone or device with a carrier contract, you are responsible for canceling your service contract with the carrier, and for all carrier charges.

There are two ways to return your phone or device and cancel your service:

  • Return your device to a Best Buy store. Be sure to tell the store associate that you want to cancel your service. Carrier service cancellation policies may vary.
  • Call Best Buy Mobile at 1-877-702-2211 (6 a.m. to midnight, CT) for instructions on how to return the device by mail. Let the phone associate know that you want to cancel your service.

What about Best Buy final sale and non-returnable items?

Please make sure that all data has been removed and the device is no longer linked to any cloud account or to any other device so that we may accept the return of this product. If you decide to return a phone or device with a carrier contract, you are responsible for canceling your service contract with the carrier, and for all carrier charges.

What about Best Buy gifts?

We will provide you store credit for the purchase price of a gift you return in store. For gifts returned via mail, we will credit the gift purchaser and notify them via email.

What about Best Buy entertainment products?

Opened physical copies of computer software, movies, music, video games, books, video game guides and sheet music can only be exchanged for an identical item.

Services, subscriptions and Microsoft 365 and Office

Return and refund details on services and subscriptions, including anti-virus software, Microsoft 365 and Total Tech Support, are found in their terms and conditions. Microsoft Office can be returned within 30 days for a full refund.
